If you want to play with color and design in a room then one of the easiest ways to do this is through the use of throw pillows.  Visually appealing and easily interchangeable, throw pillows make a living space feel more sumptuous and inviting.  One of the most enjoyable patterns to work with when using throw pillows is plaid and this is certainly one of those patterns that’s easy to use for any season or holiday.

Now, you might assume that plaids have be very polished and organized since they are considered one of the main pattern types used in design.  However, you can play with plaid in bold and eclectic ways that completely break the mold.  Think of using throw pillows that feature plaid in diagonal swatches or in patches set against a background in a complementary color.

High drama can be achieved when you use plaid with contrasting colors and this can be an easy way of introducing plaid to a more modern decorating scheme.  Plaid can certainly be a very busy pattern, particularly if you use a lot of it or you place it with a lot of other really dynamic patterns.  To overcome this, try using a plaid in a larger pattern: you’ll still get the great look, but a larger design will feature less movement.

While plaid can easily be used all throughout the year in so many different ways, the Christmas season truly is the time of year where plaid comes into its own.  When used in a holiday ensemble, plaid makes a room feel cozy and welcoming.  You can stick with a traditional plaid in green and red, but mix things up some by using plaid throw pillows that also feature holiday greetings or different holiday motifs like Christmas trees, ornaments, or reindeer.
